Chemical Dependency- the "Disease Model"
1. Addiction is a medical and a psycho-social disease.
2. The patient is SICK not BAD.
3. Patients have lost the choice to "choose not to use".
Who's an Addict?
o Using despite negative consequences
o Failed attempts at quitting
o Using more than they planned on
o Others are commenting or concerned about their drinking
How do you recognize
drug and alcohol abuse?
Physical Manifestations
o Increased pulse rate
o Increased blood pressure
o Flushed face
o Abdominal pain
o Runny / bloody nose
o Sensitivity to light
o Dilated pupils
o Ataxia
o Increases in breathing rate
o Respiratory problems
o Odor of alcohol
o Fatigue / drowsiness
o Excessive visits to MD for bone fractures, accidents, medical emergencies
o Sudden increase or decrease in appetite
o Weight loss or gain
o Nausea / vomiting
o Dry mouth
o Cardiac arrhythmias
o Perspiration / chills
o Muscular weakness / ache
o Seizures
Mood / Affect
o Depression
o Feelings of worthless-ness
o Tearfulness
o Irritability
o Diminished interest
o Agitation
o Talkativeness / rapid speech
o Insomnia
Thought Process
o Trouble concentrating
o Hallucinations
o Confusion / Distraction
o Visual Misperceptions
Suicide
o Preoccupation with death
o Thoughts of suicide
o Self-destructive behavior

Hostility
o Verbal or physical threats
o Desire to hurt others
o Angry outbursts

Medication
o Constantly asking for more medication
o Frequent visits to MD's to obtain medications for insomnia, anxiety, tension
Social Interaction
o Isolation or withdrawal
o Excessive talking
o Change in personal hygiene and/or self care
